The Chelatchie Prairie Railroad will operate its Mid-Summer Steam Train rides this weekend, departing at noon and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, and Sunday, Aug. 13. With the summer’s lush greenery and wildflower blooms to delight your eyes, this train ride will offer you moving views of north Clark County’s most beautiful countryside. The steam engine will make an enchanting excursion through a 330-foot solid rock tunnel to the Heisson area with a stop at Moulton Station to visit Yacolt Falls.

All trains depart from the train station in Yacolt at 207 N. Railroad Ave. Passengers should plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure to allow sufficient time to pick up your tickets and board the train. The train, pulled by a 1929 steam locomotive, runs south about seven miles to the Heisson area, through a 330-foot tunnel through solid rock, with a stop at Moulton Station to visit Yacolt Falls. After some yummy appetizers served at the winery at 4 p.m., the steam locomotive will pick up passengers at 5 p.m., then continue on its scenic route through Heisson and on to a bridge across the East Fork of the Lewis River. On the return trip, the train will drop passengers back at the winery for dinner and festivities.

The price per person is $45, and includes appetizers, wine tasting, the train ride, dinner, and live music from Echoes of Yasgurs until 9 p.m. This is another super-popular event, so purchasing tickets in advance of the day, while not required, is enthusiastically recommended.

Chelatchie Prairie Railroad Expansion & Steam Train Rides

The Chelatchie Prairie Railroad Association would like to invite the community to a groundbreaking ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15. The BYCX has been awarded a Legislative Capital Improvement Grant in the amount of $500,000 to construct a car maintenance facility on property leased from the county located just north of its station, 207 N. Railroad Ave. in Yacolt.

After the groundbreaking ceremony, ride along a century-old rail line behind a 1929 steam engine, chug through a 330-foot tunnel chiseled through the rock by hand over one hundred years ago, and cross a high railroad trestle over the East Fork Lewis River offering vistas of the lush forest and scenic river channel. Trains depart at noon and 2:30 p.m. from the station in Yacolt.

The volunteer-led Chelatchie Prairie Railroad Association operates steam and diesel train runs starting each year on Mother’s Day and operating alternating Saturdays and Sundays through early November, with special Christmas tree packages available through December. Additional special runs offered include wine runs with Moulton Falls Winery, the Great Train Robbery in the summer, and a Headless Horseman ride this year on Oct. 29 & 30. The railroad’s rolling stock features several passenger-carrying cars, including a regular enclosed coach. An open-air car with bench-type seating offers tremendous views of the passing landscape.

The Chelatchie Prairie Railroad is offering two days of steam train rides, with four separate departure times: noon and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, and noon and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20.
