Noted photographer Lois Settlemeyer is Camas Gallery‘s featured artist through the month of October. Born and raised on a farm in Indiana where the land was flat and the neighbors were distant, Settlemeyer had ample time to explore local forests and creeks. She kept a variety of animals as pets and the family tended the garden for food. She came to photography by a circuitous route; she worked at the Dow Chemical Company for 31 years, using chemistry and mathematics to form the structured patterns of research, analysis, and technical problem solving. Upon retirement, Settlemeyer moved to the Pacific Northwest; where she was inspired by the beauty of the mountains and streams, the forests and ocean. Photography is a medium that allows her to capture the splendor in which she lives, showing details in flowers, birds, animals, insects, fruits, vegetables, the sky, the clouds, the changing seasons.
She has now achieved both national and international recognition for her photographs, winning awards and being featured in notable publications. All the paintings and prints shown in the gallery are for sale. Camas Gallery, located at 408 N.E. 4th Ave. in downtown Camas, is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.
