Embroidery Workshop with Laura K. Bray

Nothing says “Happy Holidays” like an adorable hand-stitched gnome, am I right? Even if you’ve never embroidered before, this workshop at the Vancouver Art Space will teach you the skills you need to make a truly one-of-a-kind gift (or perhaps a gift for yourself). With “Embroidery 101: Stitch a Gnome,” local artist, craft designer, and lifestyle blogger Laura K. Bray will give you step-by-step instructions to create your very own gnome hoop art. Students will learn embroidery basics, such as how to transfer designs and patterns to fabric so that you can turn any drawing into an embroidery pattern; fundamental embroidery stitches, such as backstitch, satin stitch, and the French knot; plus tips and tricks for successful stitching. Bray has been embroidering since she was a sixth grader, and she has plenty of advice for both new and experienced stitchers!

This class is just right for students age 12 and above. The cost is $25 per person, and includes all supplies: the gnome embroidery pattern that can be used over and over again, cotton fabric, and an embroidery hoop. The class will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9. Students can register online at Eventbrite by clicking here. Vancouver Art Space is located at Suite 206 inside Vancouver Mall, upstairs near Macy’s, at 807 N.E. Vancouver Mall Drive. The Vancouver Art Space offers open studio art classes for kids and adults as well as fully catered private or corporate painting and crafting classes. Birthday parties, too! To learn more about Vancouver Art Space and see what future classes are on the schedule, visit vancouverartspace.com or see all their upcoming events when you follow them on Facebook @VancouverArtSpace.

While you’re there, you’ll definitely want to see Bray’s nature-themed art exhibit, “Cabinet of Curiosities,” featuring Bray’s original watercolors amid a display of small found objects. Bray’s watercolor butterflies were exhibited this last summer at the Attic Gallery in Camas, where Bray lives. You can see more of her work at laurabraydesigns.com, where she blogs about her artistic life. You can also find loads of Bray’s artwork on functional items like mugs, travel mugs, tote bags, stationery, and even iPhone cases at https://society6.com/laurabraydesigns.
