Kids Art Show

“Art in the Family”–a Father-Daugher Show at Boomerang + Kids’ Art Show & Party

Boomerang is hosting two art shows this August, with a huge, family-friendly launch party on First Friday, Aug. 4, from 5 to 9 p.m., featuring live music by Randy Cate, complimentary refreshments, and cranked-up air conditioning!

The first show, “Art in the Family: Systems Meet Chaos,” is a father-daughter show featuring the far-out art of nationally syndicated political cartoonist and fine artist Monte Wolverton. His small- and large-scale mixed media and ceramic pieces are vivid, playful, and abstract yet utterly engaging. His cartoons and other works can be seen at www.wolvertoon.com. His daughter, Monika Spykerman (full disclosure: that’s me, the editor of North Bank Now!) has joined him for her first gallery show featuring vibrantly colored archival-quality prints and cards of her original works: lively patterns and repeating motifs, focusing on fruits, flowers, fungi, sea life, and everyday objects. More of her work can be seen at www.monikaspykerman.wordpress.com. Tom Relth, Boomerang’s gallery curator, calls the show “brain science vs. rocket surgery.”

Launching on the same day is the much-anticipated Kids’ Art Show, featuring original artwork by toddlers up through age 18. Boomerang and Vancouver’s Downtown Association are jointly hosting a giant Kids’ Art Party in Boomerang’s lower level, with free treats from the VDA and prizes for kids in several age categories. Don’t miss this joyful and varied exhibit showcasing our budding young artists!

Boomerang—a coffee house, home décor store, and family hang out with two full floors of gallery space—is located at 808 Main St. in downtown Vancouver. All revenue generated by the volunteer-staffed store (including sales of coffee) is donated to local charities and community organizations. To learn more, visit www.boomerangvancouver.com.

Kids’ Art Show at Boomerang: Artists Wanted!

“Purpley,” by Lili P, age nine

Boomerang and Vancouver’s Downtown Association are teaming up to host the 2017 Boomerang Kids’ Art Show…and they need artists to fill the walls of Boomerang’s downtown Vancouver shop with all kinds of wonderful art! Boomerang invites young artists, from tiny tots up to age 18, to display their artwork in the gallery during the month of August. There will be a First Friday reception on Aug. 4 with live music and light refreshments, and everyone can come see what incredible talent our kids have. Original artworks in all media are welcome, including 3D sculptures, painting, drawing, fiber arts, ceramics, and more.

Drop-off time for the art and the deadline for submission is Saturday, July 29, from 1 to 3 p.m. For more information, contact Anali Gomez, Boomerang Art Intern, or Tom Relth, Boomerang Artist in Residence and Gallery Curator, at art@generosityreturns.com or 360-561-4245.

While you’re at Boomerang on First Friday in August to see the kids’ art, check out the exhibit in Boomerang’s main gallery “Systems Meet Chaos: Art in the Family,” a father-daughter exhibit featuring the original works of syndicated political cartoonist and fine artist Monte Wolverton, as well as limited edition prints by his daughter, Monika Spykerman. (Full disclosure: Spykerman is the editor of this publication, and she is super-excited about this show and hopes you’ll come.)
