The Hum Line: Works by Erin Dengerink at Angst Gallery
August 4, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pmFree
The thought-provoking works of prolific artist Erin Dengerink will be featured during the month of August at Angst Gallery in downtown Vancouver. Her exhibit, “The Hum Line (or the joy of not knowing)” will be on display from Friday, Aug. 4, through Saturday, Aug. 26. There will be a First Friday reception for Dengerink from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 4.
When Dengerink was growing up, her family had a small cabin in northern Idaho without electricity or running water, and no people for miles around. Her family spent most of every summer living in that remote space. The best gift her parents gave her was the freedom to explore the woods, meadows, and streams of that area. She learned how to entertain herself and how to avoid bears. Dengerink wandered trails alone, collecting rocks and flowers to bring back to the cabin. Often, she would dissect the flowers or smash the rocks with a hammer to get to know their structure. Dengerink came to know the landscape through the specimens that she brought home in her pockets. That same process of carefully collecting and observing is integral to Dengerink’s current art practice. Small overlooked and discarded things continue to inform her understanding of the world. This exhibit showcases the work of the past two years, in which Dengerink has developed a series of small sculptures with a focus on healing. “I think of the objects as talismans; objects that give strength or bring luck,” says Dengerink. “They are tiny tools that are meant to bring joy to the viewer.”
