Vintage Books invites you to join us for a mini writers’ workshop with author Barbara Herkert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12, where she’ll be discussing “Crafting a Life: The Art of Writing Picture Book Biographies.” Herkert’s newest title, “A Boy, a Mouse and a Spider,” illustrated by Lauren Castillo, is a biography about E.B. White. The book will be available for sale and the author will be signing copies. She’s also the author of “Sewing Stories: Harriet Powers’ Journey from Slave to Artist,” and “Mary Cassatt: Extraordinary Impressionist Painter.”
Herkert has been creating stories and illustrating them since the first grade. She currently writes picture book biographies. She loves the research and finding hidden gems about a person’s life that will appeal to young readers. She received a biology degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a master’s degree in writing for children from Hamline University. She studied art and art history at Oregon State University, and has taught art appreciation at local schools. She lives on the wet and windy Oregon coast with her family. She also spends creative time in a log house in central Oregon. You can learn more about Herkert’s work by visiting her website at www.barbaraherkert.com.
