The Chelatchie Prairie Railroad Association would like to invite the community to a groundbreaking ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15. The BYCX has been awarded a Legislative Capital Improvement Grant in the amount of $500,000 to construct a car maintenance facility on property leased from the county located just north of its station, 207 N. Railroad Ave. in Yacolt.
After the groundbreaking ceremony, ride along a century-old rail line behind a 1929 steam engine, chug through a 330-foot tunnel chiseled through the rock by hand over one hundred years ago, and cross a high railroad trestle over the East Fork Lewis River offering vistas of the lush forest and scenic river channel. Trains depart at noon and 2:30 p.m. from the station in Yacolt.
The volunteer-led Chelatchie Prairie Railroad Association operates steam and diesel train runs starting each year on Mother’s Day and operating alternating Saturdays and Sundays through early November, with special Christmas tree packages available through December. Additional special runs offered include wine runs with Moulton Falls Winery, the Great Train Robbery in the summer, and a Headless Horseman ride this year on Oct. 29 & 30. The railroad’s rolling stock features several passenger-carrying cars, including a regular enclosed coach. An open-air car with bench-type seating offers tremendous views of the passing landscape.
Tickets for the steam train are $20 per person, $19 for seniors, $15 for children five to 12, and $13 for little ones two to four. Babies up to age two are free. To buy your tickets and reserve your spot on this popular and scenic train ride, visit www.bycx.com or call 360-686-3559.
